While removing the rear main cap to install felt sealing strips (the previous engine rebuilder had used silicone instead of felt on the main cap), I was able to successfully damage the lower rear oil

Bill, I've never tried it, but I think it should be doable as long as you recognize that the best you can hope for is performance equivalent to the old seal. Normally, it's pretty much a requirement
