Mike, Make sure the tranny is in gear. When you align the input shaft with the flywheel, you can rotate the tail shaft to align the splines. This is easily done with two people and the car on jack st

I don't know if this will help but put the trans into a gear. Then turn the rear while pushing it and it will stop when it engaged the splines. Then move it around until it catches the pilot bushing

It has to be very, very close to perfect alignment to slip in. Make certain that the crankshaft and the transmission shaft are in alignment while slipping the trans in. Also, put the trans into 4th g
