Greg, I would think so. I would take the bonnet off; it's much easier to work on an engine without the hinge in the way and having to worry about the side of the bonnet hitting the back of your head

I have never replaced a TR engine head gasket, but I have been told a multiplicity of times by several different knowledgeable people that turning the engine over to pop the head gasket is a very bad

The compression breaks the seal. My head gasket experience is limited to an Alfa 1600 Giulia that I had years ago that blew head gaskets for a while until I figured out what was what. It had sleeves
