While we're guessing, I might speculate that installing an automatic into a manual shift B would at least be easier than the other way around, since you wouldn't have to fabricate (or add) the clutch

Bzzzzt. Wrong. Most MGCs were standard, although there are certainly more auto Cs than Bs - they did make quiet a few with the BW trans. I have an MGC auto trans if anyone needs one. BIll
