Folks, I'm nearing completion on a '68 Mk3 that is totally new or freshly rebuilt. Every nut, bolt, washer, screw and retainer has been removed, cleaned, polished, etc. The body and frame were taken

Of course, but that doesn't apply in this case. The original speedometer that was fitted to this car is long gone. It wasn't included with the project when I took it over. No idea what became of it o

Are you SURE you want to do this? Resetting an odometer is against the law in most states as fraud. We know you are working with a reborn car, but the mileage of the original chassis is still valid.

With the VIN, you can contact the DMV for your state and find out what the registration should be which will also have the current or last reported odometer reading on it. A rebuilt car is not 'new'.

I think this only applies when you sell the vehicle and you misrepresent the mileage. In Indiana, there is a box to check on the title when the mileage is "in excess of its mechanical limits" or "od

Thanks. If and when I ever sell this car, I will state that the odometer reflects the accurate mileage since the total, complete, 100% rebuild. And I'll have all the photos and receipts to prove it.

The engine and transmission are from a '72 Spitfire. The frame and body are from a '68. No accurate records of mileage exist and even if they did -- for which? The drivetrain components or the frame

In Oregon, this would be against the law, although we do have the check box for in excess of mechanical limits, or actual mileage unknown. If this was me, the answer is simple. Don't make any guesse

Yes. It isn't, and you do nothing. Your dealer has reset the new speedo to be as close to the true mileage as possible. That is the question here, of course. I don't know the answer for the UK, much

Hi Bill, To stay legal, you would probably be required to have the new speedo calibrated to reflect your actual mileage. This would also be the ethical thing to do. Case in point. I bought a Ford Ran

The operative point which I think you've been failing to take into consideration today is that the speedometer in question was purchased separately from the car and has no bearing on the actual mile

In UK, the answer is "the frame" (not even "frame and body" - just "frame"). But I still haven't the faintest idea how our uncivil serpents would work out what mileage you should set your new odomete
