Hello all, I've been fussing alot about my engine lately, and, thanks to some of you, I decided to buy and use a compression gauge on my MGB. Now, I know _something_ is wrong, but I'm not sure what (

Do you have any water in the oil or oil in the water? Usually these head gaskets fail between #2 & #3 which may cause #3 to have poor compression. Tyson

Tyson, now that you mention, it seems my radiator fluid has been disappearing slowly recently. When I changed the oil, I didn't see a film or layer of water, nor any whitish discolored oil, nor have

Check the valve cover cap for that mayonaise-looking stuff. With the head pulled, a very, very accurate straight edge should indicate warpage on the head and block surfaces. I had the same problem b

If you do find that the problem is the head gasket, do not use the copper gaskets. In my opinion they do not work as well as the asbestos ones. You can give it a coat of aluminum paint, or a hylomar

1,2,and4 do have low compression, but nothing drastic. The fact that they go to 120/125 with oil on them probably indicates that your guage reads 5-10 psi low. Figures this low are not a problem for

Did you have the throttle held open and a dowel under the dampers when you ran your test? Compression test needs unrestricted intake. In any case, the rings are a little tired in 1, 2 and 4. But if t

It's my understanding that you can get by with compression that's a little lower than specs, as long as the compression in all cylinders is pretty close to the others. That being said, I wouldn't wor

You could have a bad head gasket and not notice any water in the oil. I blew one in the Escort this summer and the only symptom was steam blowing out the tailpipe. When I drained the oil, I saw no w
