If I understand the problem correctly, maybe you could put some very small washers on the "nail" part of the pop rivet to space it away from the rivet gun while you install it. Jim S.

I used the same tool and found that if I put a few very small washers around the stem of the rivet (the part that breaks off and ends up stuck in the rivet gun) before you place the rivet in the gun,

one other thing you should be aware of is that when the rivet "pops" it will release the rivet gun in a violent manner. as an extra precaution i always use a piece of sheet rubber that has a hole cut
