I don't totally disagree with your line of thinking, and it certainly works (to some extent) in some situations. One simply looks at the expenditures on "supercar" development as being marketing cost

I've never bought a car because of its "racing heritage." What's it to me if the makers of the car I'm considering won a bunch of races with a completely different car? The idea seems infantile to me
