Looks to me like the purpose of the manifold is to allow you to run HIF carbs on an A-series engine.

Far as I know from Vizard, the only real drawback to the stock intake manifold occurs at higher rpms....it's internal shaping obstructs rather than aids very high flow rates and it's balance tube is
