My recently aquired '57 MGA is powered by an early (18G, 3 main bearing) B engine. I've been trying, so far unsuccessfuly, to get a decent idle at somewhere under 1000RPM (workshop manual says 500).

First off, what are you using to measure RPM? I know my tach reads high compared with my tach/dwell meter. Second: make sure the carbs are balanced. I've spend a lot of time adjusting a carb which wa

Been there. The colourtune doesn't actually tell you the mixture. It just shows you one view of the flame. I had old, high resistance plug wires and the colourtune showed "rich" even when the carbs w

Thanks for the reply. I'm using a digital tach/dwell meter. I balanced the carbs as close as I can tell with the carb synchonizer that Moss sells. The needles are new and are the ones supplied by Mos

Thanks for the reply. The plugs are new, but I'm waiting on backordered wires from Moss. Hope the wires will help. The DPO claims only 4500 miles on the wires on now and they do >>look<< to be in goo

Hmph! How about the jets the new needles go into? Wear there could also cause richness. Let's see.. I assume the pistons aren't stuck and the needles are installed to the correct "depth". John M. Tri

John replied: Hmph! is right! The jets are new and centered nicely. No piston sticking. They move freely and needle shoulders are flush with the piston body. Keith (all I want for xmas is a decent id

It would be my suspicion that the cap is not the problem-at least not in terms of it being the side entry versus the top entry styles. Side entry was original on the A and early B engines. The wires

It >>is<< a pretty dramatic range of RPM at idle. The slowest "most smooth" idle is at about 1400 rpm, but it will vary from there up to 1800 and down to about 1200. At lower speeds the variation is

The thing to remember in dealing with an MG and the SU carb is that there is absolutely NO way to properly adjust the mixture. Any and all instruments I have tried to check the mixture all conflicted
