Pickle forks work OK but there are better tools to do the job which don't rip apart the boots and do as much damage. I have pickle forks and a few other tools to seperate joints. I only use the fork

Two things it took me way to long to learn: Spray the joint down with penatrating oil the night before popping it off. Use a 4# sledge hammer (12" handle) and WHACK that pickle fork. I had used a 1#
