Back in my hot rod days, we studied the small block Chevy with a religious fervor. For the street, the hot ticket was something called pocket porting or short porting. The idea was that, in the RPM r

I used to race bikes, along with go-karts, and though the engines are smaller, a lot of the same principles apply. I found that porting helped A LOT. Though this is probably due to the fact that sto

Why would polishing use more fuel, you would think that if the mixture flowed better and you did not loose some in the "pockets" you would have better fuel metering and actually get better mileage. T

I'm sorry, but I don't know what 'porting' is. Can it be done with a dremel, like polishing? Is it a DIY job? Can anyone explain it to a machining-challenged individual? -- Michael S. Lishego St. And

With our LBCs and their sophisticated fuel systems, you don't want the air flow too smooth because all the gas will fall out. Seriously. On the "new and imporved" fuel injected engines, they are mess

Seriously, I was told or read that this is what really happens: as you move to high flow rates, the petrol tends to stick to the sides of the pipes instead of being mixed with the air. This is why ca

Depends to a great extent on the design. Side draft carb setups are victimized by this, of course, as gravity is always working against it. The SU carb design does not improve the situation as the ga

Porting is enlarging the intake and/or the exhaust ports to flow better. It is often used to match the port sizes on the heads and manifolds. I have burnt quite a few Dremels up trying to port heads
