My car is cranking very very slowly. It will crank fine if I use a battery charger and set it to "200 amp start". The battery is a 2 year old PEP Boy unit. The alternator is putting out 13 volts @ 15

Bill, I am having (had) the same problem in my 66 spitfire. In my case, the starter is bad. Check your voltmeter when cranking. If it goes *way* down (like mine did) the starter is pulling too much.

I am wondering if this is the problem with my A40. Slow cranking, new battery. I thought about the solenoid, maybe years of carbon build up are making it draw more current just to crank the starter.

Hello Bill, I identified the problem. I charged the battery and it was holding about 12.7 volts. Put it back in the car and cranked the engine while looking a the battery voltage. Voltage dropped to
