Okay it's worse then a couple of inches... it's actually more like 3/4 of an inch total travel... but the value of that ability to have the suspension interact with the track is huge.... it keeps the

I'll second what Keith wrote. If the surface were as flat as a pool table you could get away with having no suspension but the real world isn't perfectly flat--the Flat Earth Society notwithstanding

Also having run both, the suspended car is so much easier to drive. Yes its more work to build and set up but the handling improvement is worth it. BTW a long WB car with a little chassis flex rides
