- Ok, I changed my diff to 3.54 with limited slip a long, long time ago. One of the mods was the tranny speedo gear which has now been lost in antiquity. More likely in my pile of stuff somewhere, but.

- The stock gear was 15 teeth. Unfortunately they have not be available for years. Your Ford dealer should stock 16, 17, 18, and up. Each tooth drops the speed about 3 mph. Dave Johnson

- The original gear had 15 teeth part #C3OA-17271-A. You would need rather tall tires like the originals for this gear to give you the correct mph. I believe 16 teeth is closer to accurate with 175/70x

- There are many factors that can give you a wrong speed indication; speedometer, speedo cable gear sets, differential ratio, and tire size. The first thing to ask, is my speedometer reading correctly

- Good Question about the original tires. I don't know the real answer; I can only reverse engineer the size of the tire from the printed facts in the manual and on hand. Original Tire = 5.90 x 13 - no

- A math major? I recently pestered Jim Boynton to measure his original spare for me. With a cloth tape measure he got a real world measurement (but not factoring for weight) of his free standing tire

- About a year or so ago I did my rearend and asked the list about the axle steel shims too. I don't think I ever got a reply that was fruitful. I think the spec. is .006 to .008 and I was at .004 and

- Go to a machine shop supply house, and they have a roll of shim material , 15' x 6" for about $15, in .002" and up. Last a lifetime. You can cut it with scissors. Larry

- Unless I counted wrong, the red gear came out of my toploader when I first changed out the 288s, & it has 16 teeth. Al J
