My information is that on rubber bumper cars the speedo and hence the pinion (ratio at least) were the same for both OD and non-OD boxes, whereas they had been different before that. Maybe he used a

I'm not sure about your particular year, but for many years, an OD speedo has a different gear ratio than a non-OD speedo. The easiest way to correct it would be to get the right speedo for the gearb

You don't say if the speedo was jerky immediately after the conversion or if it's a recent problem. The overdrive's speedo pinion is located further to the rear of the car than the pinion on the non
