I would start at the transmission. Disconnect the cable from the speedometer drive. If you are not sure if the speedometer drive is turning then carefully jack up the rear so you can start the engin

I agree with tightening. The transmission end may be suspect as mine was. Crud and build up prevented full tightening. You can check if it is sound by pushing the inner cable from the speedo end, the
