David, I have taken the speedo apart on both the Tiger and Alpine several times. See article in United. The current wisdom is that the speedo cable when the nut on the cable is screwed to the speedo

The story I get, and see, is that the yoke on the speedo holds the bearing that spins with the inner cable core. If the cable core is too long (meaning the swaged collar on the cable is pressing on
