Since the .254mm converts to .010 in., I suspect that the crank has been turned down .010 undersize. This gives credence to your assumption that there has been some lower engine work done previously

Cylinder head gasket between 1 and 2. Had the same, you need to take the head off, check the level of the cylinder head. If warped get it milled, I suspect it dosent need it. Have a look at your hea
