The haynes book lists the fluid in the steering rack as Extreme Pressure SAE 90 oil. Is this the same as gear oil, like goes in the diffs? Larry -- I've found something worse than oldies station that

I hope so because that is what I use and just put in the rack yesterday. Actually I use the 75w-90 gear oil that is prevalent here in the cold north. David Councill 67 BGT 72 B /// or try http://www.

I just re-read the "fine manual" and it seemed that in order to fill the fluid I have to take the whole rack out. Is that true? Or, if it's in the car, can I just take the cover plate off the top and

Definitely not. Some say take the top cover off and dribble it in, I find it much easier to remove a tie from the big end of one of the gaiters and inject it with an oil gun. A word of warning, the g

Either pull the cover plate on the top or use a suringe (why can't I spell that word?) to squirt the oil into the rubber boots. Someone also suggested to me to remove one of the shims and that tight

It could be that it was only excess oil that leaked out. When I replaced both boots I inadvertently put more oil in than the rated capacity. When I turned the steering from lock to lock some of the o

Amount of oil is only 1/3 cup for the rack, not as much as one would think. You can lift off the top plate, being careful of the shims, the spring and the brass damper piece, then add the oil. It's

Usually I pull the cover plate off and then pull out that round piece, then its a matter of filling with gear oil. But I couldn't get the round piece out on my 72B's rack so I did the messier method

It does tighten the rack, but IME it doesn't really do anything to solve the problem of a worn rack. The reason is that the wear is concentrated in the middle of the rack. With the steering centered,

Yes, you can fill through the cover plate. Unfortunately, the hole is rather small, and since the internal tolerances are tight you really have to have the front wheels off the ground so you can turn
