Yeah, just one more. If the bearings hadn't been repacked old, why would any new shims be necessary? If the bearings were installed new, with shims, wouldn't one simply need to replace the bearings

Hi Michael, If the bearings are removed, inspected, found to be servicable, regreased and reinstalled, there's no reason for different shims, PROVIDING the hub was properly shimmed before. Now, since

I've replaced bearings and found I used the same shims as before. This doesn't surprise me since the bearings are precision items and the hubs and spacers are less so. IMHO the shims are to cater for

It also stops the inner races turning on the stub-axle and wrecking it - except possibly under catastrophic siezure of the bearing, no doubt due to omitting the shims and using pre-load ... about wit
