The reason you are having a hard time is probably aluminum corrosion. The way I attacked this problem a few years back was to gently tap the shift lever cap up evenly with a small chisle or screwdri

Scott, I have a small oil filter strap wrench that works great for loosening them up - just spin a few times until the corrosion breaks free and it'll pop right off under the internal spring pressure
