Don't know about Midgets and I would hardly say 'notorious', but the MGB water valve can leak from time to time rather than the heater core. It is provided with an instant leak detector though - the

Not stupid! Although the heater valve is a more common source of trouble on MGs, it sounds like you've got a leaky heater core. This means removal and a trip to the radiator shop for some soldering.
