Lifting the engine off the mounts only SOUNDS scary, it's really just opening four bolts. Then you can lift the engine 4-5 inches and get decent access to those bolts. Might still be worth it for put

Bad news Neil, I'm sure you are past "refreshing" the lower end. Sounds like you'll need a new/re-ground/good used crank. Remove the cap on the #3 conrod, you'll see what I'm talking about. Larry Hoy
