I am going to guess it won't do it when its cold, but when hot yes. Anyway, lessening the axial play/thrust in a motor shaft is next to impossible, shortening the shaft is impractical as the fan won

1/4" sounds impossibly large, are you sure the fan attachment hasn't come loose on the motor shaft ? It's not too difficult to reduce the motor's endplay, but you likely will have to able to solder.
