Here I am, doing lots of cleanup under the hood (It's the bloody bonnet to you Anglophiles). Among lots of other things, I took off the starter solenoid, which looked pretty cruddy, and cleaned it up

Could be either, based on your description. Could also be a wiring problem, or a bad connection between the wires & the switches, or a bad ground at the solenoid. You're bypassing an entire circuit,
