on the I've yet difficult? Ed, If it's the original starter and the car is a '58 TR3A, I doubt the "65" means 1965. But that's neither here nor there, your original starter was most likely a "bullet"

That would seem to say that either the solenoid on the starter is bad, or there is a bad connection somewhere. I'd try connecting a test lamp from the solenoid terminal to the housing of the starter
