I may be picking up in midstream here, but d you have wire wheels? If so, check to see if they're loose or the splines are sharked. Also check to see if pads fit tightly in calipers... -- Marc

Check the "U" bolts on your rear axle. Are they loose? This will allow the axle to shift when accelerating and / or braking. Incidentially, be sure not to twist them off if you're tightening them.

If the brakes seem to be working properly except fot the clunk, I'd suggest you put the car up on jackstands. Now grab the wheel ant try to move it front to back. Any wiggle? Check the A-arm bushing
