Can't help with the rear end noise (could be many things) but the tach problem is not the cable - it doesn't have one. Yours is an electric tach., and it appears to suffer from the same symptoms as

I've had problems with jumpy, inaccurate tachs on older models. I've tried adjusting them with the little screw on the back but once on the road it may read about 500 rpm too high or low or jump up a

As others have said, the tach is electric, not cable-driven. The problem is common and most likely inside the guage itself. They get "sticky". Mine needs a couple of taps to get going unless the hum
