GOOD tappets will have a very large radius ground on the base, the amount (measured in FEET!) as determined by the grinder, & there will be a nice edge break or slight chamfer around the edge of the

Hi Glen, I got my information out of a construction book written by the supervising enigneer of Mercedes-Benz "W.D. Bensinger". I have about 30 lifters. All domed ones have pitting near the center of

I can't visualize how doming would help rotation unless it was moving the contact patch off center in a cam/lifter pair where the cam lobe was centered over the lifter. BillThe cam lobe is indeed off

I can follow you if the lobe is not flat grindet and is tappered. That would make sense to dome the lifters because they would run on the edge. After your information I from now on test each cam if i

As usual with traditional parts like these, there's a lot of contention about what makes a good lifter and why they have specific characteristics. I don't consider these right or wrong, but any serio

Which might explain why many have a slight dome to them. A domed lifter combined with a tapered cam would tend to compensate for any error in the angle of the lifter bore. I've heard that "cam walk"

Maybe a picture will help. This is out of a Ford design manual - http://home.swbell.net/cartrip/CamTaper2.gif (do we believe Ford or Mercedes?). Keep in mind that the figure is greatly exaggerated. W

Actually, that's pretty much exactly what I said. A dome will help if it serves to move the contact patch off center. On a TR3/4 engine the cam is offset from the centerline of the lifter. If you hav

Okay, so I sound a little strident about this, but it's a leftover bias from my motorcycle days. I thought a lot of "standard practice" like this was based on "the way we always do it" rather than an

That's true, but if the cam lobe is tapered (as it should be for domed lifters), moving the contact point in from the edge is a good thing. Do the math, I think you'll find it isn't much at all. The

What a wondful discription! So don't combine domed lifter with flat lobes, and don't combine flat lifters with tappered lobes. Chris == unsubscribe/change address requests to majordomo@autox.team.net
