In order to work properly, the regulator must be grounded to chassis, through it's mounting screw. If it is not grounded, it will connect the 12V or higher directly to the gauges, and make them both

Tim, you've already figured it out, but for anyone that has "overheating" problems: Heed Stu's advice and check the regulator. The PO's mechanic (that's giving the maximum benefit of the doubt here..
