This sounds just like when my sender failed. The car kept running cooler and And don't even think of opening the gauge and trying to recalibrate. You will only make it worse. See my article in gauges

You can leave the original guage in place and install an Autometer mechanical guage where the Rootes emblem is (unless you are blessed with an original clock). The Autometer is incredibly accurate. I
