Well, it looks like a case of MSFS (Multiple Simultaneous Failure Syndrome). Putting a Voltmeter across the battery and pulling the starter showed a drop from 12.5v to 0.48v. Chucking the battery and

Well, er, ah.... IT WAS PHIL! The Prince of inadequate light, ruler of all heck, and father of statistics clouded my vision and moved my hand! It's the only explanation of how that fuse got that way!
