When I did this job I soaked the bushes in hot water to soften them, worked from inside the car, started part of the flange thru the hole in the firewall, and twisted til they went all the way thru.

This is one of those seemingly simple tasks that tries your patience. As someone else suggested, heat the bushings in a pan of hot water to soften them a bit. Your fingers will then be sore and burne

When I did mine I boiled them in water for 30 mins. Since nylon absorbs water, they get quite a bit softer. Its been 7 years since I did them, but I don't recall it being too bad. Stu
