As I recall, you have a MK-I. If this is correct, you can probably get in an access the trunk mechanism from inside the cockpit.....at least you can on my car. Try removing the metal covers for the

I may have had the same thing happen which was it was not broken but the "tripper" cog got flipped. Had to crawl through the trunk to unlatch it and then it was fine. 72 Pantera-65 Tiger-96 Thunderbi

I was able to release the trunk latch with a pool que. Put the top up, bring a strong light, pull the cover open and poke away.

I had a problem with my trunk opening for awhile. Most of the problem was worn parts and poor alignment. To open the trunk when it was stuck I had to push the button then pull hard out and up at the
