Dave, You may have a little bit of trouble with mounting 70 series tire on the narrow stock rims. I beleive that the minimum rim width for these tires is a 5 inch with a preferrence for 5.5 or 6 inch

I have a '66 MK2 and I installed 185/70 13's. They were too big and scrubbed the firewall when turning the wheel. I am not sure how much the frame has changed so I don't know if you can put 185's on.

The 175's will fit great. The 185 will only work on the rear. On the front you will hit the firewall and lip on the fender well. As far as brands go I just pick the one with the coolest tread pattern
