You might try the method that I use, which I think is the simplest, I just delete any message that I do not want to read and I can scan through the 75-100 messages a day in less than 5 minutes.

I agree with #2, but IMHO with #2 in use the digest actually becomes a pain. ...at list in direct mode, all the MG stuff filters together, and can be sorted by subject. Then at least if you start to

I would also comment that most messages are generally on-topic. The signal-to-noise ratio of this list is pretty high (which is good). There's the rare political discussion which you can ignore, and
