Hi gang, It's Friday afternoon and I'm sitting at my desk thinking about MG's instead of working. (Shhh) I have often wondered why the sequence for unbolting the head is the same as for bolting it do

loosen and retighten one at a time. The idea is to 'break loose' the 'stiction' of the nut to mating washer surface tension to get an accurate setting as you re-approach the proper torque. Then again

Good for you! Everyone needs a "brain break" now and again. I think because you're thinking that each nut gets tightened/loosened all the way in one pass. Quoting the Haynes manual for the MG Midget

Aaaahh yes..... bolt stretch... BUT not all head studs are the 'torque to stretch' type. Rod bolts yes... but MG studs can be re-used. Triumph studs are a torque to yield type and must be replaced ea

You got it right on the MG studs but they ARE all "torque to stretch" types. Tho whole idea is to stretch the stud/bolt such that the tension in it is somewhere near the optimum point in its elastici

Actually, even reuseable (i.e. non-"torque to yield") studs do stretch bit, and an accurate measurement of this stretch gives a direct measure of the compression placed on the mating surfaces (which

During the 5 or 6 times I've R&R'd the heads on my MGB's, I never got very anal about torquing them. Best I've done is two stages of tightening. But, I always use assembly lube. Only once did I have
