- It does indeed sound as though your booster is on the way out. This is exactly how the booster on my Z-28 failed. Intermittent bouts of extremely high pedal pressure, followed by a return to normal

- I've found those specs may be paint peeling, or comming off inside the booster. My old booster was filled with brake fluid. I replaced the master cylinder, since it's old seals were leeking the fluid

- The fluid in the brake booster gets there because of leaking MC seals. When you apply the brake, hydraulic pressure pushes the fluid past worn seals and into the booster. I don't believe any of that

- I believe the black stuff is the rubber seals deteriorating. Mine was like that for a while, then I lost pressure entirely and had to rebuild the master cylinder. Just a thought! Doug '69
