- Excellent idea. I've often thought a gas strut would help hold up the trunk lid, every time the wind slammed it against my head. Some auto stores carry a variety of gas struts in different lengths.

- Not very scientific but here it is: Me- 166 lbs Me and the trunk lid- 180 lbs Me and the hood- 190 lbs There are no hinges, no paint and no filler on the hood, the trunk, or me. You can do the math.
