Tubeless tires indeed were quite common (perhaps nearly universal, but I'm really not sure) by the early 1960s, at least on "solid" steel wheels. Wire wheels are another story, of course. Going back

And if you're using radial tires, be sure to use "radial" tubes; tubes made to be used with radial tires. Your local Michelin dealer may still be able to get them. J.C. Whitney used to carry them. Ed

Jim, my 59 T/R 3 are tubless as well as my 55 T-Bird, my neighbors 40 Ford are also tubeless, the rims are the same whether tube type or tubless, the difference is in the beading on the tire themselv

One major point I would like to make about using tubes is that if you pick up a nail and puncture the tube your tire will go flat instantly because of the lack of sealing point around the valve stem.

Had a '65 VW. Ran tubes in tubeless tires. No problem on the front... But, tire "crept" due to accellerating until value was pinched to leaking. And we all know how much torque those Bugs had. :-) Ch
