Jim, I (like Mayf) use a hole saw notcher and I also use lots of oil (with Pro-blend in it of course) I cut all the notches in 4130 tube on my liner/lakester and a dragster and pieces of a sprint car

I also use the hole saw type notcher but I use mine in the lathe with the back gears to slow it down and use plenty of cutting oil. I built the liner with the same two hole saws ( 1" and 1 5/8") and
