In the really old days you had to make three runs to get a record. First you had to exceed the existing record. That qualified you for record runs the following morning. First you made a down run and

Perhaps I should add that the reason it was more difficlt was more than just the extra run. There was alwas better air and traction in the cool of the AM than when you qualified the previous day. So
