The rear UJ on my GT went but was not as bad as this. Lifting on and off the throttle made it shunt like railway wagons in a goods yard. Funnily enough, the front U/J was OK but I changed it anyway.

It is not possible for a universal joint to have 20 - 30 degrees of free play and still function without it letting you know very loudly at very low speeds that something is very very wrong. Me think

Absolute agree with this. Check UJ yokes each by hand and afterwards do this with the yoke nearest to the backaxle while the wheels are tight by the handbrake. Lots of play indicate your differential
