Okay, I tried Jim's idea of brake fluid ... no go. I've received a couple of liquid choices and a couple of sanding options. So they're next on my list. By the time I'm done I'll have several new too

Alix The VIN is stamped on the right side front frame near the shock mount. (On 62s and up) Usually painted over but it is stamped on the frame. Maybe a scrape with a screwdriver will reveal it. Or y
