I contacted TN DMV re the history of my TR4A by email. They were wonderful, full 30 year history, when the car was in TN, for 15 dollars. It cost 10 dollars for the postage (I am in UK). Full marks T

The reason CA wants to see the car is to verify that the VIN on the car matches the one on the title. AFAIK, it's only when transferring a car in from out of state, or as in my most recent experience
