Since we seem to be on strange topics lately: Do washing machine motors "wear out"? We have an old washing machine that has been repaired several times through the years and works very well, except f

Sure there's not a worn belt or clutch? Dried-out bearings in the motor usally complain loud enough to be heard... -- -- Marc

IMO, more likely you've got bad bearings somewhere. Might be in the motor, but I'd guess they're in the transmission or whatever supports the drum. It's possible your motor is "tired", especially if

It could be as simple as a start capacitor.... the gig is that an electric motor usually doesn't have the butt to start itself so it gets a bit of a jolt of electricity from this thing to kick start

More likely to be brushes worn out - my washing machine had similar symptoms (ie a lack of grunt) and new brushes cured it. -- Original Message -- From: "Mullen, Tim (IIS)" <Tim.Mullen@ngc.com> To: "

I guess that's one way to put it. All depends on what sort of motor it is ... every washing machine I've ever worked on (which isn't a great many) had an inductive start induction motor (which has n

It's possible, but I would think the contacts would rapidly overheat and fail completely with that much power being dissipated in them. The starting winding usually draws more current than the run w

Do you think the problem might just be bad contacts in the motor's internal start/run switch producing lots of resistance but still giving part of the starting torque ? electric a ... an and a not (l

You must have a really old washing machine if it has brushes in the motor. Dave Russell

once had a failure of the timer switch which had separate contacts for the start and run windings...the contacts for the start winding were cracked...so we had to spin-start. Time to get out the sche

Lots of good information about motors starting, but there's just one thing... The motor is already running. The motor runs continuously, running the pump, then when the water level drops all the way

Washing machines have a clutch and transmission and the problem may be with one of them and not the motor.
