It's water, *air* and steel. Rust is formally known as oxidisation, i.e. from the oxygen in air. Not sure about steel but I know wooden fence posts, for example, usually only rot at ground level. Not

Yes. I went to the mgs archives and put the word "rust" into the search box. It hit the limit of 50 items just between 27Feb and 21May 1995. At that rate the mgs list archives would contain over 2100
