I've had two 110volt MIGs, which do fine for my use, which is probably similar to yours. TIG is much better if you are real serious (roll cages, formula car chassis) but they are much more expensive.

With your knowledge and intended usage, MIG is your only possible solution. Try to stay away from a "gasless" welder, would recommend only C25 shielding gas. Also, you will find advantages in buying

Torch...good ole oxy-acetylene welding. If you can't oxy weld, you are not going to get good welds with Mig or Arc. Its takes practice to see the puddle and Mig hides the puddle. Start with oxy and

Jim, I went through the same delema. However, I lucked out in that my father has both gas and a heavy duty arc welder. But for doing the sheet metal you really want a MIG welder for several reasons:
