John-- Just read your post as I was out of town. My $.02: I bought a Lincoln Weldpack 100 w/ gas last spring for my MGA body work and have been satisfied with it. I use 0.30 wire. For me (a novice),

The Tool Welder were I work swears by MISON gas , I don't know It's the guy commonly performs miracles with the stuff. He say's with MISON gas and stainless rods he could weld the production managers

For somebody "new" to welding, the overwhelming favvourite is a MIG. Practice for an hour or so and you'll be ready to start on your car. Be sure to get one that has a gas bottle, the "gasless" MIGs
